About the Artist
Born David Henry/Lawrence Higgins in Madisonville Kentucky on the 10th
of May in 1976--I currently reside in Cornwall, New York.
Initially trained in art and animation by my father Donald Norris
Higgins (deceased as of April 2003) of Libby Montana (last
residence of record).
--
I was awarded for participation for submissions to the WALA arts
festival in 1992 while attending G.A.T.E.S secondary school in
Parkland, Washington and would graduate from Challenger High
School in Spanaway, Washington at age 17 completing coursework 2 months
prior to the end of the school year and my 18th birthday.
--
I served briefly in the U.S. Navy from late 1994 to early 1995
stationed at Great Lakes Ill before returning home to Tacoma,
Washington when discharged. I would then go on to enroll in Job
Corps for vocational training as a building repairman from 1996 to 1997
near Astoria, Oregon. Including training in carpentry,
electrical, plumbing, paint, plastering and grounds keeping (I love to
diversify my skills rather than learn just one thing).
--
I would spend a while in fields related to repair remodeling and
construction until early 2001 when I decided to enroll in Chemeketa
Community College to study teaching in Salem, Oregon. Again as
was my habit I diversified my studies beyond minimum required
coursework, and while many students took the Summers off I
continued taking classes year round as a full time student studying
art, science, and psychology on top of the required educational
coursework. 5 credits stood between me and two Associates Degrees
by the end of 2003, I instead settled for a single General Studies
Associate.
In 2002 while attending college I also became legally certified as an
ordained Deist minister (more to prove a point than to be one)
officially holding the titles as Reverend and Minister David Higgins
with the full authority to conduct wedding ceremonies as well as ordain
ministers in the U.S. -- I still carries this authority and titles, but
I am no saint.
I went on and decided to compete in 2001 in the Tough Man tournament
which would aire in the Spring of 2002 on FX where an entire nation
would get to see me have my ass handed to me in a matter of 45 seconds
into the first round at the Salem Armory--this was the only
"sanctioned" fight I was ever a participant of, many others wound up
with me in hand cuffs (I told you, I am no saint).
The early business now called David Higgins' Alien Design™ was also
started around the early part of 2002 as Greetings From Earth--based
around my crude illustrations of alien beings struggling to understand
the ways of humanity. I also sold artwork under that business
name while still attending college by offering it to bidders in on line
auctions selling only two pieces in 2002.
Also around this time I met my future fiance Lynn online--at the time
it was just a friendship from separate coasts and we wouldn't actually
start dating until 2006 when neither of us were actually seeing anyone
else.
Later I would rename the business a number of times evolving from
Greetings From Earth to Alien Concepts, to Alien Design Concepts Inc.,
to Alien Design to now calling it David Higgins' Alien Design™ or
"DHAD" for short (My business only has to compete with a pharmaceutical
drug using that same acronym now).
I then tried to continue at Portland State University of Portland,
Oregon and attended 2 terms studying science and history 2003/2004
before dropping out to find regular employment--a recession is no place
for a professional artist.
By 2007 I was also a twice published poet submitted through contests,
though I cannot remember much about them nor find the examples beyond
the one rough draft of one particular work I keep in my sketch book the
works were decent. The first being while I resided in Montana in
1999 listening to the sounds of strange singing in the woods on a dark
night--my pop explained that that was a noise made usually by some
mountain lions, but it was in perfect pitch. The second written
sometime at the end of 2006 of an angel ripping out it's wings feathers
which would later be published in another book.
Only time will tell before I ever see the published results again, I
don't read very much poertry.
--
I am an independent artist, not affiliated nor owe any loyalty with any
artists
guilds, associations, unions, clubs, etc nor any dues or duties have I
paid to any such organizations--I promote only the things I see fit to
in an ethical manner. My artisan skills are varied and diverse I
am a master of many of them through combined education, practice, and
study. Though I hold no collegiate titles such as "Doctor" my
skills and experience a artist are quite refined through many years of
practical application and speak for themselves.
--
I come from a family of skilled artists few of which have attempted to
further develop their skills besides my oldest sister(in performing
arts) and I (graphic arts, and writing), but all are equally talented
including the two older sisters who went directly down the path of
motherhood(and a personal pirsuit of craft work), our father encouraged
the talent any way he could in us all.
